The TV series is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

We’re still a while away from Halloween, but wedding season is almost upon us, which presents an entirely different kind of horror. This is what Netflix’s new eight-part series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen hinges on.

Young couple Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco) are finally tying the knot – and to do so, they must travel to Nicky’s wealthy family’s home nestled in scary woods and blanketed in snow. Before they get there, the atmosphere is already growing tense. An abandoned baby, a rotting fox and an intimidating man with an unplaceable accent all threaten Rachel – and that’s all before she meets Nicky’s uptight and menacing family.

Her future father-in-law has a passion for taxidermy – specifically the family’s deceased Irish Wolfhounds, which she is warned to never look in the eyes. Nicky’s siblings Portia (Gus Birney) and Jules (Jeff Wilbusch), a pair of blue blooded and vicious WASPs take turns intimidating an already paranoid Rachel.

Rachel becomes convinced that she’s going to meet her end in this house, before she ever gets the chance to marry Nicky – and she’s not completely wrong.

From the outset, we know that something terrible is lurking – but the genius of this show lies in the way it unfolds. There are more red herrings than a fish market, and it keeps you guessing right through to the very end.

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen does not rely on jumpscares to keep the tension up – instead, there’s a quiet psychological fear that underpins every single scene in the show. You won’t realise you’re holding your breath as you watch until you feel your chest tighten.

I loved the premise of this show – it felt brand new, like nothing I had ever seen. In a world of constant remakes and live action versions, it’s always a joy to come across a story you haven’t seen before.

As well as being a great horror series, it’s also a fabulous commentary on the terror of commitment and being a woman. How can we ever truly know someone else? What parts of ourselves must we sacrifice for long lasting happiness?

One thing I will say is the show is a slow burn – and a dark one. This is not the kind of show you can watch in the daytime – it needs to be viewed in darkness so you can see the full set design and appreciate the terror. Despite this one setback, I think that Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is a darkly comedic, unsettling must-watch series.
