Thriller fans searching for a sharp, fast-paced binge to squeeze in over the festive season should take note. Netflix continues to grow its collection of British crime and mystery dramas — from long-forgotten miniseries like The Widower to modern hits such as Line of Duty. Now, the streamer is adding another tense British import to its lineup: Channel 5’s four-part thriller Captivated, landing on Netflix later this month.
Originally airing in February 2024 under the title Too Good to Be True, the series was later released internationally — including in Ireland and Australia — as Captivated. At its core is a familiar but effective premise: a struggling single mother accepts what seems like a dream job working for a wealthy businessman… only to realize the offer may come with a far darker price.

Who stars in Captivated?
The drama is led by Kara Tointon (EastEnders, Mr Selfridge) and Allen Leech (Downton Abbey, The Tudors), who play single mum Rachel and affluent entrepreneur Elliot. Both actors are Channel 5 regulars — Tointon appeared in The Teacher earlier this year, while Leech went on to star in the crime drama The Vanishing Triangle.
For Downton Abbey fans used to seeing Leech as the warm, idealistic Tom Branson, his turn here is strikingly different. As Elliot, he delivers a performance that’s controlled, unsettling, and deliberately opaque. Paired with Tointon’s grounded and emotionally resonant portrayal, the dynamic between the two becomes the show’s driving force.
Speaking ahead of the release, Leech revealed he underwent an intense fitness regime for the role, explaining that Elliot’s rigid, controlling personality demanded a highly disciplined physical presence. “He’s very regimented,” the actor said, “so I wanted him to look like someone who sticks to a strict routine.”
What is the series about?
Captivated follows Rachel, a single mother barely scraping by as a cleaner. When she’s offered an exclusive housekeeping position for Elliot — fewer hours, far better pay — she jumps at the opportunity. But as Rachel settles into her new role, subtle warning signs begin to surface, raising questions about Elliot’s true motives and just how dangerous this seemingly perfect arrangement might be.
What did viewers think?
When the series first aired, audience reaction was largely positive. Many viewers praised it as gripping, addictive, and ideal for binge-watching. Social media reactions described it as “impossible to stop watching” and “a brilliant thriller not to be missed,” with particular praise directed at the lead performances.
That said, some viewers felt the plot leaned toward predictability, calling certain twists “obvious” or “a little far-fetched.” Even so, most agreed it remained an entertaining and tense watch.
What about the critics?
Critical response was generally favorable. The Independent called the series “unoriginal but gripping,” awarding it three stars, while the Daily Mail was more enthusiastic, handing out a four-star review.
Captivated arrives on Netflix on December 21. The series is also currently available to stream on Channel 5 under its original title, Too Good to Be True.
