A 100% rated series on Netflix has received “the highest praise” despite some “disgusting” scenes.

Eight-part supernatural series Marianne has been raved about since it dropped on the streaming service back in 2019, with horror author Stephen King even recommending it to his followers.

“If you’re one of those sickos – like me – who enjoys being scared, MARIANNE (Netflix) will do the job. There are glints of humor that give it a STRANGER THINGS vibe. It also has (I say it with all due modesty) a Stephen King vibe,” he penned at the time.

The French language Netflix Original tells the story of author Emma Larsimon (Victoire du Bois) who crosses paths with a childhood friend at a book signing. Her friend informs her that the events of her books are coming true, and that her own mother is convinced she is the witch at the heart of them.

Troubled by what she has heard, Emma ends up returning of her hometown of Elden to investigate, leading to a devastating – and gory – chain of events.

Netflix’s synopsis teases: “When a horror novelist takes a break from writing, she discovers the demon from her book exists in the real world. This malevolent spirit named Marianne draws her home and insists she continues writing… or else.”

Fans have likened the series to Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House which is also available on Netflix, as well as Stephen King’s IT, The Conjuring and Sinister.

At time of writing, the first season boasts a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score. Sadly Netflix cancelled the show meaning there will not be a second season – however, there is an adequate conclusion provided to most of the mysteries and story arcs.

“Best horror series on Netflix on the same level as Mike Flanagan’s Haunting of Hill House… which is the highest praise I can give anything!” one fan penned.

A second lamented: “Years later and I’m still so furious this show was cancelled. Really, really well done- whip smart, funny, stylish touching, unsettling and truly scary. What I wouldn’t give for someone/anyone to give this show the Season 2 it so richly deserves.”

Meanwhile a third viewer gushed: “Effectively Scary Supernatural Horror. Fans of IT, Conjuring, Sinister and the like will enjoy this small town group of friends facing a returning evil.”

Marianne is now streaming on Netflix.
