Netflix has released a new three-part true-crime documentary exploring the mysterious disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005. That May, a group of high school graduates from Mountain Brook, Alabama, traveled to Aruba to celebrate their milestone. But Natalee, 18, never boarded the flight home, sparking an island-wide search that yielded no answers—until 2023.

For the first time, Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway, shares the full account of the case that has haunted her for nearly two decades, including a “dramatic confession” revealed twenty years later. The series also includes interviews with detectives, never-before-seen footage, and audio from Natalee’s loved ones, shedding light on forgotten moments and previously unreported details of the case.

Directed by Dani Sloane (The Menendez Brothers, Girl in the Picture) and Matthew Galkin (Murder in Big Horn, One Night in Idaho: The College Murders), the documentary promises a deep, unflinching look into a story that captivated the world. The official release date on Netflix has not yet been announced.

The Case
Natalee was last seen outside Carlos’n Charlie’s, a restaurant and nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba, getting into a car with locals. Dutch national Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe were interrogated multiple times but released due to insufficient evidence.

Over the years, van der Sloot made conflicting statements about Natalee’s fate, including claims she died the morning she vanished and that her body had been disposed of, later retracting some of his statements. In 2012, he was convicted of murdering Stephany Flores Ramírez in Peru.

In June 2023, van der Sloot faced trial in the U.S. for extortion and wire fraud related to Natalee’s disappearance. On 18 October 2023, he pled guilty to extortion and confessed to murdering Natalee by blunt force trauma after she rejected his sexual advances. He is now serving his sentence in Establecimiento Penitenciario Ancón in Peru.

The Netflix documentary will chronicle the tragic story of Natalee Holloway, her family’s relentless pursuit of justice, and the shocking revelations that reopened one of the most haunting unsolved mysteries of the 21st century.
