Five people, including two children, were rushed to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash near Violet Town in the state’s North East on Friday afternoon, with some patients believed to be seriously injured.

They were all understood to be in a stable condition on Friday night.

The Hume Highway was closed in both directions near Violet Town following the crash about 1.30pm, that reportedly occurred when a B-double truck hit road work vehicles, causing it to roll and burst into flames.

“A semi has hit a construction bump truck in the northbound lane,” someone posted on socials.

“Semi has gone across the south bound lanes and into the ditch and caught fire.”

Another said the fire had “spread to the trees”.

Police said it was still too early to know the details surrounding the crash, which was still being investigated.

A CFA spokesperson said six crews were called to the scene.

Ambulance Victoria said most patients were rushed to Wangaratta Hospital while one adult was taken to Goulburn Valley Health.

“Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics attended the scene,” a spokesperson said.

“Two adults and two children are being transported by road ambulance to Northeast Health Wangaratta. One adult is being transported by road ambulance to Goulburn Valley Health.”
