A man who stabbed a nurse in the face, neck and hands with a pair of scissors after she asked him to wait has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. Romon Haque, 38, had asked the Royal Oldham Hospital worker for meds at 11.30pm on January 12 last year.
The nurse, who was tending to another patient, told him she would come and see him shortly, but instead of waiting Haque got out of bed, walked over to her and pulled the scissors out of his pocket. The thug stabbed her from behind three times and had to be pulled off his victim by the nurse’s shocked colleagues.
Det Sgt Jennifer O’Brien from Greater Manchester Police said: “This was a horrific, unprovoked attack on a woman who was simply doing her job for those in need in a hospital.
“I want to commend the bravery of those who intervened and who prevented the situation from potentially being much more serious.”
The nurse suffered serious injuries which required urgent medical treatment and was taken to intensive care after the brutal attack.
Haque, of Yasmin Gardens, Oldham, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article. He was subsequently found guilty of attempted murder.
He was sentenced to 28 years at Minshull Street Crown Court on Wednesday (February 11). He is due to spend 22 years of his sentence behind bars and the rest on licence.

Det Sgt O’Brien said: “Emergency workers should never face violence from the very people they are trying to help. I am glad Haque is now behind bars following this vile incident.”
Claire Aitken, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service North West, said Haque’s attack left the nurse with lasting trauma after he was found guilty of attempted murder in July 2025.
Haque had been admitted to the hospital for a mental health assessment on January 8, 2025, but it was found he had drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
He told police he hears voices after his arrest, but was deemed fit to stand trial by two psychiatrists after an initial court appearance.
The brute accepted he had attacked the nurse and caused serious injuries, but claimed he had no intention of killing her.
