Two people have died, and one has been wounded after a shooting at South Carolina State University.

On Thursday, Feb. 12, SC State confirmed that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was investigating after the on-campus incident via a statement issued on Facebook.

“The university issued a campus lockdown at approximately 9:15 p.m. [local time] Thursday following a shooting report in an apartment at the Hugine Suites student residential complex,” the statement said.

SC State has since confirmed in a news release obtained by PEOPLE that the lockdown has now been lifted.

“At approximately 5 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. 2026, South Carolina State University officials lifted the campus lockdown resulting from a shooting on campus,” the release said.

The school added in its initial statement that SLED investigators were “on site and actively investigating.”

“University officials have not yet confirmed the victims’ identities or the condition of the wounded person,” the statement added.

SC State said that the school’s Department of Public Safety was being “assisted by the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office in patrolling on and around the campus” following the shooting, per the statement.

The university said that all classes on Friday, Feb. 13, had been canceled and that counselors were available to students.

Officials have yet to release details regarding a suspect.

SLED didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.

The incident comes after SC State issued a lockdown in October after two separate shootings left one person dead and two injured during the school’s homecoming celebrations, per NBC News. One of the shootings occurred near the Hugine Suites, the outlet reported, which is the same student housing complex where Thursday’s tragedy occurred.

After October’s shootings, Gerald Hubbard Smalls — the school’s vice president for finance and administration — said that the university had implemented additional safety measures, “including controlled entry points for major events, increased camera monitoring, and enhanced emergency communications protocols,” according to NBC News.
