Carrie Bickmore has revealed a shocking head injury after a late-night accident at home left her with a deep gash that now requires surgery.

The 45-year-old radio and TV host shared the ordeal with fans on Instagram on Monday, posting a photo of the injury and revealing the moment she walked into the corner of a wall during the Easter break.

“Walked into the corner of the wall over the break. Looked like a crime scene. Blood spurting from my head,” she said.

“Got it glued back together so I could go on holiday with my family the next day.”

However, the injury has proven more serious than first thought, with Bickmore later revealing she had likely damaged a nerve.

“Turns out I have hit a nerve. Healing terribly. And hurting,” she wrote.

“Also randomly had a lady drop her carry-on suitcase on my head. God it hurt. Now gotta have it fixed properly by a plastic surgeon.”

Keeping her trademark humour, she added: “Scars are hot yeh? Face for radio (except tonight when I am back on tv for Celebrity Intervention on channel 7)!”

The mother-of-three opened up further about the incident on her radio show with co-host Tommy Little, explaining it happened in the middle of the night just before she left for a holiday to Sri Lanka.

“The night before I went, I was asleep in the middle of the night and got up to get water,” Bickmore told Little, before her co-host interjected and asked if she was at a hotel or in her own home.

“No- in my own home,” Bickmore said, before Little joked: “You did this in your own home- are you ok?”

Bickmore continued: “I misjudged where the wall was and I literally walked into it, the corner, with such force that as I fell, I collected a lamp with me that was on the bedside table.”

She admitted she had been feeling lightheaded at the time and believes it may have contributed to the accident.

“I could feel myself getting lightheaded, and I thought, I’ll walk with speed so I can get to the bathroom quicker- and then I walked into this wall. And I had blood- I could feel it coming out… It was spurting out, I could catch it with my hand, and then it dripped all down my eye.”

After paramedics arrived, Bickmore had the wound bandaged and was advised to have it glued the following morning before her flight.

But the fix didn’t hold. She later revealed the wound “popped open”, leaving her unable to swim or wash her hair for 10 days while on holiday.

Now back in Australia, Bickmore believes the injury has not healed properly and may involve nerve damage.

“When I tap my head, I feel this sort of pain in the back of my head, it’s a shooting pain- it must be a nerve,” she said.

A plastic surgeon has since told her the initial treatment was ineffective.

“He said, ‘it was so deep that the glue has done absolutely nothing’,” Bickmore said.

She explained the repair will involve removing the glue, stitching the nerve and then carefully closing multiple layers of skin.

Bickmore said she wanted to be upfront about what happened.

“I was walking to get water, and I’ve done myself a doozy,” she said, adding she didn’t want people thinking she had “fallen outside a nightclub”.

Despite the ordeal, she appeared in good spirits while filming the new comedy show Celebrity Intervention on Monday evening, hosted by Mick Molloy and Glenn Robbins.

She was even joined by her eldest son, 18-year-old Oliver Lange, who joked: “Seeing you dressed as a lifeguard made me want to drown.”
