An elderly driver is lucky to be alive after his van burst into flames in Perth’s south, causing Bunnings staff to rush to help.
A fireball brought traffic to a standstill on the Leach Highway in Myaree on Monday as flames swallowed the van and thick black smoke billowed from its front.

An elderly man was pulled from the driver’s seat at the intersection of North Lake Road.
“I saw another man in high-visibility who was helping an elderly man out of the car,” witness Kirby Roach said.
“The car was still revving at this point.
As they walked away, the van “started blowing up with a bit of fire around the engine area”.
“There were at least two or three separate small explosions,” he said.
Another witness said she was the first car in the traffic.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s gonna blow’,” she said.
Witnesses said the driver was in shock.
“Three of the tyres popped and firies had to smash the windows, bit chaos,” Bunnings worker Gypsy Barton said.
An ambulance was called as a precaution, and the man was given a check over, but he didn’t need to be taken to hospital.
“He was a bit down, a bit sad, but I’m sure he can get back up on his feet,” Barton said.
Roach said he was “just glad that I could be of assistance”.
“I’m really just glad that the guy is OK,” he said.
