On the evening of September 19, the Jackson Convention Center will echo with soul, pride, and purpose as Season 23 American Idol winner Jamal Roberts takes the stage to give back to the state that helped shape his roots. The Meridian, Mississippi native who is only the second Black male to win this competition (Ruben Studdard was the first) is headlining a special fundraising event in support of Alcorn State University’s Athletics Department, a cause that hits close to home for many.
The event is being produced by Carla Kirkland and The Kirkland Group, a renowned educational consulting firm with a strong track record of community support. For Kirkland, this is more than a professional endeavor, it’s personal. A proud 1986 graduate of Alcorn and a first-generation college student in her family, Kirkland knows firsthand the power of education and the life changing impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
“I would not be where I am today without Alcorn,” Kirkland shared in a video conference. “This concert is not just about the music. It’s about rallying support for our student athletes, increasing alumni giving, and reinforcing the importance of investing in our HBCUs.”

All proceeds from the concert will benefit all athletic programs at Alcorn. “From football to track, softball to basketball, the funds raised will help enhance training facilities, upgrade equipment, and provide greater scholarships support for student athletes, who proudly represent the university across the country,” said E. D’Wayne Robinson, Athletic Director Director for Alcorn.
Robinson, who was appointed AD in 2024 after serving as deputy associate athletic director for the university, is confident that this event will boost student moral as well as alumni giving. “I am grateful to have this opportunity to work with Carla, she has invigorated my team, and she has the magic formula for supporting her alma mater.
For Roberts, who continues to shine on national stages following his American Idol win, this event is a homecoming of sorts. Roberts is extremely proud to be a Mississippian and every opportunity to showcase his state, he takes advantage of. Roberts said in an interview with a local TV station in Meridian recently, “I am committed to Black excellence and giving back.”

The night promises more than just powerful performances of music and comedy; it is a call to action. HBCUs like Alcorn have long been incubators of talent, leadership, and culture, but they rely heavily on community and alumni support to thrive. Increasing alumni giving is not just beneficial, it is essential for sustaining scholarships, academic innovation, and competitive athletic programs.
As anticipation builds, the message is clear: September 19 is about more than a concert, it is a chance to make an impact. Whether you’re an alumnus, a supporter of HBCUs, or a fan of good music, this is your opportunity to be part of something bigger. Come and spend an evening with Jamal Roberts and Alcorn State University.
