Fernando Alonso and Taylor Swift were once linked, and the F1 star has issued a telling response when asked about the singer’s engagement to Travis Kelce

Fernando Alonso looks onFormula 1’s Fernando Alonso has dropped a four-word reaction to being asked about the engagement of pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL icon Travis Kelce. Alonso, 44, was once romantically linked with Swift, 35, back in 2023, thanks to an anonymous comment on social media that hinted at the duo being an item. The chatter followed the ‘Love Story’ singer’s break-up with actor Joe Alwyn and the F1 icon’s split with TV presenter Andrea Schlager.

Swift and Kelce, also 35, have since stirred headlines with their recent engagement after initially getting together in the summer of 2023. Asked for their thoughts on the pending union between Swift and Kansas City Chiefs star Kelce, numerous F1 drivers gave their take to Sky Sports F1 – yet Alonso’s was perhaps the most telling. Letting out a sheepish grin, before laughing, the 44-year-old said: “Good, congratulations, I guess?”.

Speculation of a link-up between Alonso and Swift intensified last year after some fans believed Swift called out the two-time world champion on her most recent album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.

Swift is famous for addressing her previous relationships in her songs and a lyric on one song, ‘imgonnagetyouback’, led fans to believe the singer was throwing shade toward Alonso. “Small talk, big walk, act like I don’t care what you did. I’m an Aston Martin that you steered straight into the ditch, then ran and hid,” Swing sings on the track.

Alonso’s status as a driver for Aston Martin in F1 naturally convinced many fans that the track was indeed about the Spaniard. Alonso, however, has also played a part in fuelling rumours himself with a series of cryptic responses to questions about his love life.

It was believed, however, that he was simply milking the topic rather than there being anything substantial to the claims. Upon rumours about the pair spreading, Alonso had toyed with fans by posting a highly cryptic video on TikTok.

The clip showed the Spaniard looking at his phone while sitting in a chair, before looking up to the camera and winking, all the while the video was soundtracked by Swift’s song, ‘Karma’. In the caption, Alonso wrote: “Race week era.”

The term ‘era’ has become synonymous with Swift after it was the title of her record-breaking ‘Eras Tour’, which spanned the globe from 2023-2024.

However, Alonso’s use of the song ‘Karma’ may be coincidental due to the fact he used the term in a radio message to Renault teammate Jolyon Palmer, after his retirement in the Italian Grand Prix in 2017.

Yet stirring fans into a frenzy once more, Eagle-Eyed Swifites – the term coined for Swift’s most ardent fans – noticed the F1 hero branding himself as an “anti-hero” in season five of Netflix show, Drive to Survive. ‘Anti-Hero’ is also one of the singer’s most famous songs.

The links between Alonso and Swift were never confirmed and were ultimately just rumours. Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in a social media post in late August.

The musician captioned the post: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married”. In less than 20 minutes, their post received more than 1.5million likes.
