The hip-hop world is reeling after the devastating death of Lil Poppa, born Janarious Mykel Wheeler, who died this week at just 25 years old. What began as a routine phone call after a minor car accident ended in a tragedy that has stunned his inner circle and left fans searching for answers.

According to a report by TMZ published Thursday, February 19, the young rapper took his own life following a single-car crash on Interstate 85, just south of Hapeville, Georgia. Authorities say the vehicle was still operable after the accident, but Poppa reportedly called his manager seeking advice on what to do next.

Hapeville Chief of Police Bruce Hedley told the outlet that arrangements were made for the two to meet at the parking lot of a nearby Hilton hotel. It was supposed to be a brief check-in — a conversation about the accident and next steps. But what unfolded instead would become the final chapter of the rising artist’s life.

When his manager arrived, Poppa never stepped out of the car. He remained seated in the driver’s seat, the window rolled down, speaking quietly from inside the vehicle. Chief Hedley declined to comment on the specifics of their conversation. Then, in a sudden and heartbreaking moment, Poppa pulled out a gun, aimed it at his head, and fired.

An off-duty police officer who happened to be working at the hotel immediately called for emergency assistance. First responders rushed to the scene, and Poppa was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 11:23 a.m.

News of his passing sent shockwaves through the music industry. In a statement, his label Collective Music Group (CMG) expressed profound grief over the loss.

“We are stunned and devastated by the loss of our beloved family member, Janarious ‘Lil Poppa’ Wheeler,” the statement read. “Poppa was more than a talented artist — he was an ambitious young man with depth beyond his years and endless potential.
