Netflix is kicking off 2026 with a chilling addition to its Nordic noir lineup: Land of Sin (original title Synden), a five-episode limited Swedish crime series created, written, and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Peter Grönlund (Goliath, Beartown). Premiering globally on January 2, 2026, this dark thriller promises to immerse viewers in a fragile world of shame, violence, and generational secrets.

Set against the stark rural landscapes of Sweden’s Bjäre peninsula in Scania, the story begins with the discovery of teenager Silas’s body in a remote farmhouse. Highly intelligent but perpetually angry investigator Dani (Krista Kosonen, known for Blade Runner 2049 and Finnish dramas) is paired with rookie colleague Malik (Mohammed Nour Oklah) to probe the case. Dani’s personal ties to the victim pull her deeper into a web of fierce family loyalties and old feuds centered around patriarch Elis (Peter Gantman), who issues a chilling ultimatum: solve it quickly, or he’ll handle justice himself.

Grönlund describes the series as “not your average crime show,” delving into a darker, more fragile realm where “shame, love, and violence share the same pulse.” The mismatched duo navigates a patriarchal “rat-hole” of generational conflict, uncovering sins that echo biblical themes of original transgression in a modern, uncertain world.
The cast blends established actors with debutants, a hallmark of Grönlund’s authentic style. Kosonen’s rogue cop brings intensity, while Oklah’s fresh-faced idealism contrasts sharply. Supporting players include Lisa Lindgren and others, adding layers to the dysfunctional families at the heart of the mystery.
Early buzz positions Land of Sin alongside Netflix’s Swedish hits like The Åre Murders, appealing to fans of brooding Scandi dramas such as Broadchurch or The Bridge. With all episodes dropping at once, it’s perfect for post-holiday binges. As Grönlund pushes beyond formula, this limited series could be the gripping thriller to start your year.
