Tributes continue to pour into world boxing champion Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton after he was found dead at his home in Greater Manchester.
The Stockport-born fighter was 46 years old. A police cordon was in place at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde yesterday morning (September 14).
Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that a body has been found and said that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
On Monday, Ricky’s family issued a statement paying tribute to the legendary boxer. They said: “He had a heart as big as his smile, and his kindness, humour and loyalty touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
“To the wider world, Richard will always be remembered as one of boxing’s greatest champions – a man who gave everything inside the ring and wore his heart on his sleeve outside of it.”
On Tuesday night, his son, Campbell, issued a separate statement on the heartbreaking news.
The devastating news comes months after the legendary boxer announced his return to boxing with a fight planned in December.
Further details on his death were heard on Monday night, when close friend and BBC commentator Steve Bunce said Hatton’s manager had found his body on Sunday.
Mr Hatton, who would have turned 47 in October, had spoken openly about his struggles with mental health and drug addiction.
He survived suicide attempts and overcame a fall out with his family who he made up with after addressing his own mental health.
During his boxing career, he held multiple world championships, as well as UK titles, and was named Fighter of the Year in 2015.
A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
