Hampton allegedly said as she approached the train line she was “not gonna stop for no train”.

The Floridian driver disobeyed railroad warning systems as she jolted across the tracks despite having 29 students and another adult on board.

Footage shows the yellow school bus trying to cut onto a busy main road as several cars drive past.

Sumter County School District Superintendent Logan Brown said that if the bus had been just six inches further back then it would likely have been an “extremely catastrophic situation”.

Scary video taken from one of the students sitting at the back of the bus shows just how close the train came to hitting them.

Several children can be seen rushing to the front of the bus as the train rushes on past while other pupils scream.

Terrified witness Christina Armstrong said she could see the panic on the children’s faces during the near miss.

She recalled: “The bus had stopped before the tracks, and then it started to go.

“A car had changed into the other lane, by the looks of it. I saw the bus pull forward, but not enough,” she said.

“I wanted to cry. I immediately started to pray afterward because it was a lot.”

Superintendent Brown praised the train conductor for sounding the horn to make Hampton pull forward.

He hailed them as “a hero”.

No one was injured on the bus or on the train.

Hampton has since been charged with 29 counts of felony child neglect and failing to stop at a railroad crossing.

She has also been fired from her job as a school bus driver in Bushnell, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando – a position she held for over a decade.

In response to the close call, the district has now changed all its bus routes so they divert around the train tracks rather than across them.
