My number one comfort show has won a number of awards and gained a cult following for people who still tune in.

Everyone has at least one comfort show they watch from time to time. I have a few I switch between, it could be The Thick Of It, I’m Alan Partridge or Star Trek, but there is always one that remains superior and I am not alone in thinking it is worth a watch.

With a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Frasier is the US sitcom that continues to stand the test of time and I have watched at least once a week (perhaps more) for more than a decade. I remember the days when this masterpiece of farce comedy was used as a mid-morning filler on Channel 4, and this is where I first came across the loveable but pompous radio psychiatrist as he navigates a new life in Seattle. While  Frasier first aired in 1993, many were already familiar with the lead character from the Boston-based sitcom Cheers.

Running for 11 seasons through to 2004, Frasier, played by Kelsey Grammer, still stands up well today, with many episodes centring on the comedic fallout of a simple misunderstanding that the audience is all in on. It is filled with hilarious one-liners, jokes that poke fun at the elite and a bit of slapstick thrown in for good measure.

It charts Frasier’s move from Boston to his new luxury apartment in the fictional Elliot Bay Towers, and starts his new radio phone-in show at the local KACL station with producer Roz, played by Peri Gilpin.

Hilarious situations arise when he takes in his salt-of-the-earth father, Martin, played by the late John Mahoney, Martin’s home health care worker, Daphne, played by Jane Leeves, and his little dog, too, Eddie.

And there is plenty of witty tit for tat banter between Frasier and his equally pompous brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce, over a steaming macchiato at the Cafe Nervosa.

It is loved by viewers and critics alike, and every season is filled with standout episodes that get funnier with every viewing.

And viewers are still offering fresh reviews more than 20 years after it finished, giving this iconic sitcom quite the cult following.

One said: “Just a fantastic series. Great writing. Brilliant acting. As much as I enjoy Kelsey Grammar in this series… David Hyde Pierce really does steal the show.”

Another said: “This is a go-to classic for intellectual humour while building upon continuing story arcs and having solid standalone episodes. Frasier is one of the best TV series ever made.”

A third added: “Definitely one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, watching it over again.”

There was a Frasier reboot, although this has a new cast, except Kelsey Grammer, and mixed reviews.
