The mysterious death of Lisa Jane Ross, a 38-year-old woman from Edinburgh, has taken an even more disturbing turn after Greek investigators revealed that text messages were allegedly sent from her mobile phone for nearly two weeks after they believe she died.
Known affectionately as Lisa by her family and friends, Ross was found inside a suitcase at a derelict building on Evelpidon Street in Athens on July 18, after a rough sleeper entered the abandoned property. A nearby resident had reportedly alerted authorities after noticing a strong odor coming from the building, which had reportedly stood empty for around two years.
According to investigators, Lisa is believed to have died approximately eight days before her body was discovered. However, police now say messages continued to be sent from her mobile phone between July 15 and July 29, creating the impression that she was still alive.
Among those messages were texts sent to her father in Edinburgh, reportedly stating that she “needed some time to herself” and “wanted to be alone for a while.” Another message, allegedly sent to a friend in Greece on July 18, claimed she was heading to a Greek island and needed some time away.
Investigators are examining the messages as part of their efforts to reconstruct Lisa’s final days and determine who may have had access to her phone. Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, and no conclusions have been announced regarding who sent the messages.
Police have also revealed that there were no obvious external injuries or clear signs of a struggle found during the initial examination of Lisa’s body. Toxicology tests are now underway to determine whether drugs, poison or another factor contributed to her death. Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that they have not ruled out any possibilities.
Meanwhile, Lisa’s disappearance has devastated those who knew her.
Friends have flooded social media with emotional tributes, remembering her warmth, generosity and compassion. One friend described her as having a “beautiful heart,” while Pauline Hood wrote that Lisa was “one of the kindest souls” she had ever known and shared that she would always treasure the memories they made together.
Back in Scotland, Lisa’s family is being supported by Police Scotland, which confirmed it is working closely with Greek authorities, Interpol, and U.S. officials as the international investigation continues.
