A recovery mission remains underway in North New Jersey for a missing 11-year-old girl after she and her two friends fell into the Passaic River Wednesday evening, according to local officials.
Authorities said they received a report around 6:21 p.m. Wednesday about a group of three children, including a 10-year-old boy, his older 11-year-old sister, and their friend, an 11-year-old girl, who were reportedly attempting to enter the river from a park off-ramp. A search and rescue team was deployed to the scene, and, within hours, authorities found the dead body of the 10-year-old boy. His 11-year-old sister, however, managed to flee to safety and was reunited with her parents.
However, Passaic Mayor Hector Lora said rescue teams are still searching for the remaining missing 11-year-old girl.
Relaying concerns from the rescued 11-year-old girl, Lora said, “She expressed that they were in the water. They were trying to get out; she got out at a different point, not too far from here. She is back with her mother, and she’s worried about her brother as well as the friend that was with them.”
Local authorities confirmed that divers with a U.S. Marine unit have been deployed to assist with the mission.

A good samaritan reportedly tried to jump in the water and save the children. However, the man said the water was too deep, and the current was too strong for him to get to the children, prompting him to contact authorities.
