A snowboarder has been carried away on a stretcher after a horror injury at the Winter Olympics.

China’s Liu Jiayu was taking part in her second run in the women’s snowboard half-pipe qualifiers when her board got caught in the snow, sending her tumbling to the ground.

The 33-year-old landed awkwardly on the her neck and then lay motionless on the snow.

Medics rushed to her aid as the music was cut and spectators anxiously watched. She was eventually carried away but there is no word on her condition.

The competition was suspended for 10 minutes while the medics tended to the athlete.

Liu won silver at the 2018 Games but will take no further part at Milano-Cortina after finishing 14th in her qualifying run with a score of 62.75 – outside of the top 12 who advance.

USA’s Chloe Kim topped the tables with a score of 90.25.
