The police in Barberton, Mpumalanga, have launched an inquiry after 10 buses were gutted in a fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am.

Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said the interim report indicates that one bus initially caught fire. Security personnel responded and called the fire department for assistance, but in the process, nine more buses also ignited, bringing the total to ten affected vehicles.

“Currently, circumstances surrounding this incident have not yet been established and will form part of the inquiry,” Mdhluli said.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, said authorities are working diligently to determine the cause of the fire.

“We have taken note of the statement issued by the MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Transport. We will ensure that the established team works diligently, and for now, we cannot rule out any possibilities,” Mkhwanazi said.
