‘Best’ detective show branded ‘better than Sherlock’ – 97% ‘masterpiece’

A detective drama with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is still being called one of the best crime series ever made years after it first aired. The show has become hugely popular with viewers thanks to its realistic murder investigations, gripping storylines and great cast.

Some fans have even claimed it is better than Sherlock despite the BBC series becoming one of television’s biggest detective hits. The crime drama holds an impressive 97% average critic score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also helped launch an entire television universe, which now includes multiple spin-off shows

Many viewers still regularly recommend the series to anyone looking for a long-running crime drama to binge-watch.

That show is Bosch, the Amazon Prime Video series starring Titus Welliver as LAPD detective Harry Bosch.

Based on the bestselling novels by Michael Connelly, the series first premiered in 2015 and ran for seven seasons before ending in 2021.

The show follows Bosch as he investigates murders and major crimes across Los Angeles while also dealing with corruption, gang violence and problems in his personal life.

The cast also includes Jamie Hector as Jerry Edgar, Amy Aquino as Lieutenant Grace Billets and Lance Reddick as Chief Irvin Irving.

Those who have seen the show, did not hold back in their praise. One person said in an IMDb review: “One of the best crime shows you will ever watch. Every season is a fantastic watch. Highly recommend!”

Another added: “As far as detective shows go, this one is up there with the best. In my opinion it’s better than BBC’s Sherlock but then again Sherlock is not even in the top 10 for me.”

After the original show ended, the story continued in Bosch: Legacy, which follows Harry Bosch after leaving the LAPD and becoming a private investigator.

The spin-off also focuses on his daughter Maddie as she starts her own career as a police officer in Los Angeles.

Another spin-off called Ballard was later introduced in 2025 as part of the same universe.

The series follows Detective Renée Ballard as she leads the LAPD’s cold case division while frequently crossing paths with Bosch.

Fans wanting to watch the full Bosch universe should start with Bosch seasons one to seven, before moving on to Bosch: Legacy and then Ballard.

All three are currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
