Lindsay Clancy broke down in audible sobs as a medical examiner outlined the injuries sustained by her children, as revealed through their autopsies.
The court was forced to call two recesses on Wednesday afternoon as the 36-year-old wept uncontrollably and trembled during the 12th day of her murder trial. Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, tried to console her, patting her back as she put her head on the desk and cried, “I can’t do it.”
Dr. Rennee Stonebridge, representing the state’s chief medical examiner’s office, was called to the stand. Stonebridge was responsible for examining all three of Clancy’s children following their deaths in the basement of their Duxbury, Massachusetts home on January 24, 2023.
While Clancy has acknowledged strangling 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan Clancy to death using exercise bands, her defense maintains that she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis at the time.
Dr. Stonebridge testified that her examination of 5-year-old Cora’s eyes revealed “acute hemorrhaging,” including a “hemorrhage” surrounding the nerve connecting her left eye.

When the prosecution asked, “Are they able to find what caused them?” Stonebridge responded, “It is consistent with something asphyxial.”
The prosecution sought further clarification, asking whether she was referring to “strangulation of some type?” to which she answered that “it can be.”
Clancy’s sobbing intensified as the examiner went on to describe the comparable injuries endured by 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan. During testimony regarding Callan, Stonebridge stated that his injuries suggest that “There has been some sort of incident causing the brain to have a certain period of time where blood and oxygen flow were not appropriate.”
When asked by prosecutors, “How long does it take for a brain to start dying after a loss of blood flow and oxygen?” Stonebridge replied that estimates vary by source, but approximated “6-8 minutes, it depends if resuscitation occurs.”

Medical examiner Barbara Olson also took the witness stand Wednesday afternoon. Olson, who conducted the autopsy on Cora Clancy on January 25, 2023, outlined the traumatic injuries to the 5-year-old’s neck and head, as the child’s mother wept in the courtroom.

Clancy, 36, has entered a not guilty plea to murder charges in connection with the deaths of Callan, Dawson, and Cora Clancy, who ranged in age from 8 months to 5 years old. The children were discovered in the basement of the family’s coastal Duxbury, Massachusetts home, while their mother was found lying in the yard, having leaped from a second-story window, leaving her permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
Prosecutors contend that the former labor and delivery nurse was a calculated killer who orchestrated her husband’s absence before strangling the children with exercise bands on Jan. 24, 2023. Prosecutor Shanan Buckingham has cautioned jurors against treating the trial as “a public debate about women’s mental health and how the medical system treats women.”
