Aston Martin will undergo significant leadership changes in 2026, with legendary Formula One designer Adrian Newey assuming the role of team principal whilst current chief Andy Cowell transitions to a newly created chief strategy officer position.

The Silverstone-based outfit confirmed the restructuring on Wednesday, marking a pivotal shift in management for the struggling team.

The 66-year-old Newey arrived at Aston Martin earlier this year as both a shareholder and managing technical partner following his high-profile exit from Red Bull Racing.

Newey’s credentials include an extraordinary record of achievement across multiple teams, having contributed to thirteen drivers’ world championships and twelve constructors’ titles during stints with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.

However, his initial months at Aston Martin have reportedly been marked by disagreements with Cowell regarding the team’s strategic direction and vehicle development philosophy.

These tensions emerged during what has proved a challenging season for the outfit, with reports suggesting fundamental differences in approach between the two senior figures over the team’s technical path forward.

In his new capacity overseeing trackside activities, Newey expressed optimism about the team’s potential, stating: “Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026.”

Meanwhile, Cowell’s revised position will see him concentrate on strengthening the team’s technical alliance with Honda as they prepare for the sport’s new regulations.

The restructuring received strong backing from team proprietor Lawrence Stroll, who declared: “Both of these changes will ensure the team is best placed to play to their collective strengths.”

The team currently languishes in eighth position in the constructors’ championship with just two races left in the season, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the new leadership structure.
