Authorities Confirm the Couple Were in a Secluded, Shark-Warning Area When the Bull Shark Struck – Harrowing Video Shows Desperate Fight for Survival

“The young couple may have been doing something private, as this area is often deserted precisely because it’s full of shark warning signs!” Those chilling words from a NSW Police Senior Constable Mark Travers have sent shockwaves through Australia as investigators revealed disturbing new details from GoPro footage recovered in the fatal shark attack that killed 25-year-old Swiss tourist Livia Mulheim and left her boyfriend Lukas Schindler, 26, fighting for life at Kylies Beach, Crowdy Bay National Park, on Thursday morning.
The couple, both from Zurich and on a romantic Australian road trip, were snorkelling in an unpatrolled, remote section of the beach when a 3.5-metre bull shark ambushed them at 6:42 a.m. Police confirmed the area is heavily signposted with shark-warning signs and is known locally as “extremely high-risk” due to frequent sightings. “It’s secluded for a reason – people don’t swim there,” Constable Travers said. “The footage suggests they may have been engaging in intimate activity when the shark struck.”
The recovered GoPro, mounted on Lukas’s mask, captured the entire horror in crystal-clear 4K. It shows the couple laughing and kissing in waist-deep water before the shark surges from below, clamping onto Livia’s torso in a single, devastating bite. Lukas’s screams are audible as he punches the shark’s head and tries to pry its jaws open, blood clouding the lens. Livia’s final, barely audible words – “Ich liebe dich” (I love you) – can be heard before she loses consciousness. Lukas, bitten on both legs, managed to drag her to shore but collapsed beside her. Despite frantic CPR from early-morning walkers, Livia was pronounced dead at the scene. Lukas remains in critical condition at John Hunter Hospital with severe lacerations and blood loss.
The footage has been described as “one of the most distressing pieces of evidence we’ve ever handled,” with officers requiring counselling after viewing it. Police are now investigating whether the couple ignored multiple warning signs and whether alcohol or distraction played a role.
Livia, an investment analyst, and Lukas, a diving instructor, had been travelling Australia since August, documenting their “dream adventure” on Instagram. Their last post, 18 hours before the attack, showed them embracing at sunset with the caption “Forever starts here.”
As the Swiss consulate assists with repatriation and Lukas battles for life, the tragedy has reignited urgent calls for stronger beach safety measures in high-risk zones.
