Notorious ‘villain’ groom Tyson Gordon copped a serious tongue-lashing from the experts on Monday’s episode of Married At First Sight
The Footage: Controversial Statements and Insensitive Comments
Jaws dropped as Tyson was seen making controversial statements about his desire for a “submissive” bride and insensitive comments about gay people.
The footage, which was filmed last year, painted a picture of a groom who held deeply problematic views about gender roles and relationships. His comments about wanting a “submissive” partner drew sharp criticism from the experts, who have consistently advocated for equal partnerships based on mutual respect.

The Clash: Mel Schilling Explodes

It was the groom’s attitude to feedback from Alessandra Rampolla that set off fellow expert Mel Schilling
But it was the groom’s attitude to feedback from Alessandra Rampolla that set off fellow expert Mel Schilling.
“Stop speaking over her,” she exploded at Tyson.
Mel, who tragically died from bowel cancer earlier this year, continued, “Tyson, this is unacceptable,” as the groom shook his head in frustration and rolled his eyes.
It was only after expert John Aiken intervened that Tyson stopped shouting at the experts.
John Aiken’s Intervention: A Problem with Respect

‘Stop speaking over her,’ Mel roared at Tyson
After telling the angry groom that they were struggling to understand his point of view about marriage, John brought up Tyson’s attitude toward women.
“And one of the things here that’s noticeable is that when Mel and Alessandra were talking to you, you talked over them and continued to do that.
“But you’re not talking over me—and that’s a problem.”
John’s comments were a clear and direct observation of Tyson’s behavior. He was willing to listen to a male expert but dismissed the female experts, talking over them and refusing to engage.
Mel’s Lengthy Takedown: “This Is Unacceptable”

The 30-year-old property investor looked visibly uncomfortable as he sat on the couch with his former bride, Stephanie Marshall, 32, for the final reunion ceremony
John’s comments moved Tyson to apologize, and it was then that Mel stepped in with a lengthy takedown.
“When it comes to the way you communicate with and about women, it is important that you show respect,” she began.
“Every time you’ve sat on this couch, you’ve struggled to even make eye contact with Alessandra and I.
“You only ever used John’s name. So it’s the disrespectful behaviour that we’re calling you out on. Not your views.
“This is something that we genuinely hope that you can learn from and take away.”
Mel concluded, “Because I really don’t know how you’re going to have a healthy relationship with a woman in the future if you’re not able to develop that… [and a] respect for women.”
Tyson’s Response: “I Feel Like I Do Have Respect for Women”
Tyson was having none of it and refused to accept that the experts had a point.
“I feel like I do have respect for women, Mel,” he said.
“So here’s a woman telling you that it doesn’t come across that way. So that’s important for you to hear,” Mel replied.
The exchange highlighted a fundamental disconnect. Tyson believed he respected women, but his behavior—talking over them, refusing to make eye contact, and dismissing their feedback—told a different story.
The Verdict: A Lesson in Respect
Tyson’s appearance on the reunion couch was uncomfortable to watch. He was defensive, dismissive, and unwilling to accept criticism.
The experts, particularly Mel Schilling in what would be one of her final appearances before her tragic passing, did not hold back. They called out his behavior, explained why it was problematic, and urged him to change.
Whether Tyson will take their advice to heart remains to be seen. But the footage of his behavior and his refusal to engage respectfully with the female experts will not be forgotten.
As Mel said, if he cannot develop respect for women, it is hard to see how he will ever have a healthy relationship.
The MAFS reunion is meant to be a time for reflection and growth. For Tyson, it was a public reckoning. And he did not come out looking good.
