A quiet suburban street north of Adelaide was placed into lockdown on Thursday night after police made a startling discovery during a raid.

A suburban street was pushed into lockdown after a police raid uncovered explosive materials, sparking a visit from the bomb squad.

On Thursday evening, officers attended a property in Waytown St in Elizabeth Park, in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, where they said they found potentially explosive chemicals and cannabis plants.

After the chemicals were assessed, SAPol’s bomb response unit also attended the scene and identified “volatile explosive materials”.

An occupant of the property, a 55-year-old man from Elizabeth Park, was then arrested and charged with a string of offences.

These were; possessing supplies for the manufacture of explosives, possessing explosive instructions, cultivating cannabis and possessing cannabis.

The man did not apply for bail following his arrest and is due to appear in Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.

Following the alleged discovery, the premises was secured overnight and the road closed to all traffic while safe removal of the explosives was carried out.

Officers also spoke to neighbours and instructed them to stay in their own homes during the process.

Addressing the media at the scene on Friday afternoon, Det Chief Insp David Huddy said: “We have identified explosive material. It is against the law to have explosive material.

“That explosive material has been identified, safely handled and removed.

“Elizabeth Park is safe. Waytown Road is safe. If you hear of people being involved in making explosives, call us on Crime Stoppers and we can take some action.”

The street is expected to reopen soon.
