Two Married At First Sight Australia stars have quit the experiment in emotional scenes.

Sam Stanton and Chris Robinson tied the knot during the reality programme, but their relationship broke down after just weeks.

Although things started off strong, with the couple merging into the wider group after a late entrance and Chris opening up to Sam about his future plans to become a parent, after homestays week, things turned sour.

Farmer and personal training business owner Chris and cycle spin studio owner Sam decided to part ways midway through the experiment, leaving them making their final decision during the last commitment ceremony.

In front of experts John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Alessandra Rampolla, the couple confirmed they had broken up and were leaving the experiment before final vows.

Sam began by admitting it had been a “tough” week, while Chris confessed his “regret” from attempting to leave at the last commitment ceremony.

Opening up on their experience during homestays, he went on: “We had a bonfire, Sam pulled out a journal with some questions in it. Hand on heart, I was answering them as best as I could and then Sam decided to leave the farm.

“I thought, I’ve really tried to turn this around, I really took onboard your guys’ feedback, and I feel like I’ve shut down now.”

Sharing his version of events, Sam said: “I feel like you’re saving face, especially like the flowers and dinner thing, it felt very like, ‘I need to do these things to show that I’m putting in the effort’.”

As Chris maintained that his actions were “genuine”, Sam went on: “I feel like your effort was to push forward and there was effort for you, there was never effort like, ‘I need to grow for us and want to grow to be a better partner for you’.”

When asked by Alessandra where their relationship went wrong, Sam continued: “I feel like Chris never really fully forgave me for calling him out on behaviours. From then on, especially after you guys gave feedback, it was like a no-return point from then.”

Chris added: “After the retreat, that chemistry was lacking for me. We were intimate a second time, and I just felt like that wasn’t there for me.”

He continued: “If I’m being honest, it was just the quality of the interaction. It just wasn’t there for me.”

Chris said he didn’t tell Sam for fear of “hurting his feelings”, while Sam admitted his “surprise” to hear it for the first time.

He said: “What really sucks is I was out on the farm, and I was herding cows and I was like, ‘This is so good,’ the kids thing never bothered me, it’s always something I wanted in my life. It’s so annoying that everything else would have worked.”

With Mel admitting the experts were “disappointed” at the results after a hopeful start, the couple chose to end their time in the experiment.

Sam said: “It is disappointing. I came here to find love, and I know that I’m a slow burner. I get anxious when I do get feelings for someone because it takes me so long to build feelings for someone. It’s just really disappointing that it all ended up like this but you know, high hopes for the future.”

Chris added: “I want to be really good friends with him, we’ve been on this journey for eight weeks, so I hope that we can stay in each other’s lives outside of here.”

Declaring his choice to leave, he added: “I’ve obviously learnt a lot about myself and I hope you have too. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for us, my time has unfortunately run out so I have to leave.”
