They didn’t win American Idol, but this performance says otherwise.
John Foster, Breanna Nix, and IAMKNOWN reunited after the American Idol finale to deliver a stripped-down, straight-from-the-gut version of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” No studio gloss. No drawn-out arrangement. Just three voices and one of the hardest songs in country music to sing without completely falling apart.
And they pulled it off.
The trio’s connection started during the show. Breanna Nix and IAMKNOWN (Rylie O’Neill) were duet partners during Hollywood Week. They sang Brandon Lake’s “Gratitude,” a performance so good that Jelly Roll FaceTimed Brandon Lake while it was happening. Lake called it “the most gorgeous version” of the song he’d ever heard. Breanna advanced. IAMKNOWN was cut, but the moment clearly stuck.
Now, with the season in the rearview—Jamal Roberts winning, Foster coming in second, Breanna taking third—the three Idol alums are keeping the music going, and this time, they took on a country classic that’s destroyed even seasoned pros.
Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High” isn’t just another sad country song. It was written after the death of Keith Whitley and finished after Vince’s own brother Bob passed away. The song hit country radio in 1995 and still makes grown men cry in arenas. It’s been performed at more funerals than anyone can count. You don’t cover this song unless you’re ready to feel something real.
And Foster, Nix, and IAMKNOWN didn’t back down from that weight. They didn’t sing the whole track—just a clip—but the harmonies landed hard. Breanna leads with the soft edge she carried through the Idol season, and John Foster comes in underneath with that grounded, clean tone that carried him to the runner-up spot. IAMKNOWN fills in the spaces with rawness you can’t coach. The trio’s voices stack like they’ve been singing together for years, not months.
What made it work wasn’t the volume or range. It was the control. They didn’t try to overpower the song. They just stayed in the emotion and let the lyrics carry the punch. And it connected. Fast.
Fans flooded the comment section asking for a full version. One said, “Just lost my husband. Keep singing for Jesus, John.” Others begged them to record the whole song or even tour together. One comment called it “the sweetest singing ever.” Another said, “Y’all’s voices just blend so well together.” No hype. No gimmicks. Just proof that sometimes, less really is more.
They’ve already teased a clip of “I Told You So” before. Now, it’s “Go Rest High.” So yeah, people are hoping they keep this going and finish what they started.
They might not have taken the Idol trophy, but this kind of collaboration? It’s already worth more.
