Police in Dyfed-Powys, Wales, have launched a major murder investigation following the death of a 49-year-old man in Welshpool town centre early Sunday morning. Authorities immediately cordoned off Church Street, erecting a forensic tent as forensics teams combed the area for evidence. While the victim’s identity has not been publicly released, officials confirmed that his next of kin have been informed of the tragedy.
Emergency services were initially called to the scene at 1:16 AM following reports that a man had been seriously injured. A ground ambulance alongside the Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter rushed to the location to provide advanced critical care. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, who performed CPR for nearly two hours, the man could not be saved and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a witness who was sitting nearby, a chaotic scene unfolded just before the police arrived, marked by the sound of women screaming. The witness added that he saw a crowd of people trying to push a man away before another individual suddenly fled the scene on foot.
Shortly after the incident, officers arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of murder, and he remains in police custody for questioning. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the major crime team are leading the ongoing enquiries. Detectives have identified a key timeframe between 12:45 AM and 1:15 AM and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, possesses footage, or was present in the area at the time to contact them immediately.
