Meghan Markle did the right thing by not showing up alongside Prince Harry during his trip back to the UK last week, a PR expert has claimed. The Duchess of Sussex was expected to join her husband on his five-day trip back into his home country to mark the one year to go until the Invictus Games in Birmingham.

However, just before the trip was about to begin, it was announced that she would not be joining her husband, at least in London, due to concerns regarding their security while in the country. Meghan did not make any public appearances in the UK, but she travelled to the country to meet the King and Queen, alongside her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the first time in four years. The private family meeting dominated news headlines despite both sides remaining tight-lipped about it.

Now, a PR expert has claimed Meghan’s quiet stance would likely help in her efforts to restore some of the damage done to the public’s perception of her since she quit the Firm.

Renae Smith, founder of PR and branding agency The Atticism, told the Daily Express: “ The biggest headline ended up being the private meeting with the King and Queen, and that was probably the best possible outcome from a PR perspective.

“So yes, she dominated some of the headlines, but she always will when it comes to the Royal Family. But this time, it felt far more measured.”

Ms Smith added: “Will it ‘fix’ anything? I don’t think so, not yet.

“One successful trip does not suddenly repair years of reputational damage or changes entrenched public opinion in Britain. Public perception simply doesn’t work like that.

“BUT – what this trip did do was stop making things worse. And when it comes to Meghan, that REALLY matters.”
