Oliver Tokic-Bensley said he was sitting on his board alone at Middleton Beach, about 80 kilometres south of Adelaide, when he felt something grab his foot.

“I felt something sharp … I sort of jumped when it got me and then I kicked my foot away and luckily it didn’t hold onto me,” he told ABC News.

He said for a “split-second” he thought it might be the end.

“I was like ‘oh sh** it might come back and bite me somewhere else’,” he said.

The year 11 student then saw a fin pop up in front of him.

He said he assumed it was a bronze whaler because of the colour of its fin.

Oliver said he then had a very nervous 70 to 100 metre paddle back to shore.

“I thought it was going to come back and bite me again,” he said.

“I was hoping it wasn’t chasing me.”

Back on shore

When Oliver arrived at the beach, he called his sister and his parents came down to check on him.

The Adelaide family was holidaying in the area over the Easter break.

“They [my parents] were pretty shocked,” he said.

“I took a couple of photos of it to show my mates.”

Oliver said the bite was not bad enough to call an ambulance, but he still went to hospital.

“They cleaned it out [the bite] and just bandaged me up,” he said.

“Apparently because of the size of the bite it [the shark] was 1.5m to 2m.”

Oliver said he did not have any stitches.

Surfing ‘worth the risk’

Oliver said he was not scared of sharks and would still go out surfing in the future once his bite healed.

“It’s all part of it, I went in there knowing there was a chance [I’d get bitten by a shark],” he said.

“It’s worth the risk.”

He said despite the ordeal, it “sorta made” his Easter weekend.

“Yeah nah, it was pretty exciting,”

he said.

SA Police confirmed it had received a report of a shark bite at Middleton.

Shark Watch SA founder Anton Covino told 891 ABC Adelaide that the bite mark on Oliver’s ankle looked like it was probably from a juvenile shark.

“We’re not entirely sure [what shark it was] if you look at the bite mark on his ankle it even looks like he even stepped on some rocks or a reef,” he said.

“There’s no real clear indication that there is a jaw around his ankle … but judging by the teeth marks, we can’t say what shark it is entirely.”

Mr Covino told people to avoid swimming at dawn or dusk.
