Not much is known regarding Michael Schumacher’s health status since his skiing accident almost 12 years ago but his family have recently had positive news regarding his nephew

Michael Schumacher, the iconic seven-time Formula 1 world champion, has been absent from public view since a tragic skiing accident in December 2013 left him with severe brain injuries.
The German former racing driver, now 56, suffered a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps, hitting his head on a rock despite wearing a helmet. He was airlifted to hospital and put into a medically induced coma for several months before being moved to his family’s home on Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he continues to receive 24-hour medical care.
Over a decade has passed and little is known about Schumacher’s condition, which is described as profoundly challenging. Reports suggest he is largely bed-bound, unable to speak and reliant on a team of up to 15 caregivers for his daily needs.
Finnish neurosurgeon Dr Jussi Posti, who has followed the case, recently suggested that Schumacher’s condition has likely remained similar since the accident. “Based on the information available, I don’t think he leads a very active life,” he told Finnish media outlet Iltalehti.
German broadcaster Felix Gorner echoed this sentiment, describing Schumacher as “a person… who can no longer express himself through language,” adding that it is “a very sad state of affairs. Court papers from earlier this year additionally characterised him as “partly helpless, in need of care and visibly marked” by his injuries.
Sources have disclosed that he communicates non-verbally, mainly through his eyes, with only a select few trusted individuals permitted to visit, including former Ferrari colleagues Jean Todt and Ross Brawn and ex-driver Gerhard Berger.

Despite the difficulties, the Schumachers have enjoyed some good news as of late thanks to the recent engagement of Michael’s nephew David Schumacher. The 24-year-old racer, son of former F1 ace Ralf Schumacher, proposed to Hungarian racing driver Vivien Keszthelyi whilst on a Maldives holiday earlier this month.
The couple have been together for numerous years after meeting through a mutual friend. Schumacher, who is a factory driver for Ford Racing, announced the news alongside his future bride on Instagram through several photos of them on a beach with his caption reading: “She said Yes, he ocean witnessed our love, and the sunset sealed our promise, 05. 11. 2025.”
The Schumacher family has rigorously safeguarded Michael’s privacy, with long-standing manager Sabine Kehm maintaining in 2016: “Michael’s health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard.”
His wife, Corinna, has remained resolute in this stance, stating in a 2021 Netflix documentary: “We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
Their son, Mick, another former F1 driver, shared in the same film about the emotional impact: “I think dad and me, we would understand each other in a different way now… I would give up everything just for that.”

Despite the family’s attempts to maintain privacy, Schumacher’s condition has been revealed through leaks and blackmail. Earlier this year, a blackmail scheme involving former nightclub bouncer Yilmaz Tozturkan and his accomplices came to light, with demands for £12million to prevent the release of nearly 900 photos, 600 videos and medical records onto the dark web.
The images depict Schumacher in a hospital bed, wheelchair and connected to medical equipment. Tozturkan was sentenced to three years in prison, while his accomplices received suspended sentences.
However, the disappearance of a hard drive raises concerns, with barrister Thilo Damm cautioning: “We don’t know where the missing hard drive is… there is the possibility of another threat through the backdoor.”
