Having debuted in Abu Dhabi at the end of the previous year, Doohan endured a nightmare start to life in the hotseat.

The former Alpine academy driver retired from the first race in Australia, before 13th, 15th, 14th and 17th place finishes.

Doohan then retired again in Miami, before being replaced by reserve driver Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the season.

The unfortunate star’s brief F1 career is profiled in the new season of Drive to Survive, which was released on Friday.

Reflecting on what happened, Doohan made a shocking revelation.

He said: “I got serious death threats for this [Miami] Grand Prix, saying they’re going to kill me here, if I’m not out of the car.

“I had six or seven emails saying if I am still in the car by Miami, all my limbs will be cut off.

“Wednesday, I was there with my f***ing girlfriend and my trainer, and I’ve got three armed men around me — I had to call my police escort to come and get it under control.”

Doohan’s difficult spell in F1 left him with a sour taste.

Speaking to The Times, he added: “I wasn’t able to enjoy being a Formula 1 driver, something I dreamt of for so long. So yeah, it’s pretty s***.”

Doohan remained at Alpine as reserve driver for the remainder of the 2025 season before parting company with the team.

He has since signed up with Haas to back up Ocon and Oliver Bearman.

Upon the announcement, Doohan said: “I would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to grow and take on the great challenge of 2026 together.

“I’m eager to begin working with the team and collaborating on a successful season.”
