Formula 1 fans have erupted after Daniel Ricciardo surprised them with a surprise appearance alongside a former teammate.

Formula 1 fans have absolutely lost it after Daniel Ricciardo made a surprise appearance alongside Max Verstappen in a new Red Bull-backed video sparking an outpouring of love for one of the sport’s most iconic pairings.

The reunion came during a Ford-sponsored racing challenge that pitted four-time world champion Verstappen against rookie Arvid Lindblad in a series of on-track tests using 12 Ford vehicles spanning more than 100 years of motorsport history.

But while the concept itself was impressive, it was Ricciardo’s sudden arrival ahead of the final showdown that stole the spotlight.

“I gasped when Daniel just showed up out of nowhere,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “It’d be a shame to waste Maxiel they have wonderful chemistry.”

Another simply summed up the collective mood: “MAXIELLL.”

Ricciardo, who served as Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate from 2016 to 2018, joined the video as a special guest host alongside YouTuber Jeremiah Burton, instantly sending fans into meltdown.

“Seeing Daniel with Max was the best thing,” one YouTube commenter wrote, while another added: “Big time! Danny! Max! What a combo we have here.”

Others joked their worlds had collided. “Max and … DANNY? AND JERRY HOSTING IT???? My worlds are colliding,” read one viral comment.

The challenge itself saw Verstappen and Lindblad face off across acceleration and cornering tests before a winner-take-all final race.

Lindblad ultimately took the honours, clocking a blistering 1:03 lap time compared to Verstappen’s 1:06.

“A special guest joins them as both drivers take staggered starts for a warm-up lap, followed by two flying laps,” narration explained.

Still, the result barely mattered to fans, who were far more focused on Ricciardo’s chemistry with Verstappen, a dynamic affectionately dubbed “Maxiel” during their Red Bull years.

“I didn’t expect we’d ever see Maxiel in a PR video again,” one fan wrote. “Also love that Max predicted the final gap between times perfectly.”

Another added: “AAAAAAAAAA this has made my entire week.”Ricciardo’s been enjoying a more relaxed life post racing. Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage

Ricciardo also delivered one of the video’s most quotable moments when asked what mindset a young driver needs when racing Verstappen.

“You need an ego that’s really big,” Ricciardo said, “[to give] all the confidence you need.”

The appearance marks another high-profile collaboration since Ricciardo signed on as a Ford Racing ambassador in September 2025, following his departure from Formula 1 after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.

Ford will also partner with Red Bull Powertrains from 2026, fuelling speculation that fans may see more Verstappen–Ricciardo crossovers in the future.

“Friendship ended with Honda. Now Ford is my best friend,” one fan joked online.

The reunion also reopened old conversations about Ricciardo’s place alongside Verstappen. During their three seasons as teammates, Ricciardo actually outscored Verstappen overall, finishing with 626 points to the Dutchman’s 621, a stat fans were quick to resurrect.

Max’s father Jos Verstappen has previously said his son learned more from Ricciardo than any other teammate.

“I do think maybe he learnt the most from Daniel Ricciardo,” Jos said. “Max was a young guy then and Ricciardo really good, a qualifying beast.”

While Verstappen has since gone on to dominate the sport, winning multiple world championships, fans still hold a deep attachment to the era when Ricciardo was the one who could rattle the cage.

“I like to think that this way, a part of Daniel will always be on the track,” one fan wrote. “I miss him a lot.”

With Red Bull and Racing Bulls set to unveil their 2026 liveries at a Detroit event on January 15, and Ford now deeply embedded in the Red Bull ecosystem, fans are daring to dream.

“Wdym we got Maxiel in 2026???? Am I dreaming????” one wrote.
