Channel 9 responds to disturbing allegations from MAFS cast: ‘Filmed in the shower’

The network has responded to allegations about the show that were submitted to SafeWork NSW.

Channel 9 has responded to detailed allegations after cast and crew behaviour on Married at First Sight prompted an investigation.

SafeWork NSW began investigating the dating show after five requests were made in 2025, and as a result MAFS was issued three improvement notices.

“The improvement notices were related to reporting of notifiable incidents, systems of work to manage for physical and psychological hazards and work health and safety training,” a SafeWork NSW spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle.

Allegations include “violence and aggression” by producers and contestants, as well as a bride being filmed in the shower without her consent, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Complaints also alleged they lacked privacy due to production having access to apartments at all times and the cast not being allowed to remove their microphones while in the bathroom.

Participants claimed that they were threatened or intimidated if they tried to leave the production, with one going so far as to say that they were blocked from exits.

Channel 9 has responded to the explosive claims made to SafeWork NSW, telling Yahoo Lifestyle that the network and Endemol Shine take their obligations to health, wellbeing and safety of MAFS Australia participants “extremely seriously”.

“When it comes to the health, well-being, and safety of participants our approach is not a ‘set and forget’. We are continually looking at ways we can improve our process and support. At the end of each season we review and make adjustments where needed,” a spokesperson said.

“We’ve co-operated with SafeWork NSW’s enquiries to Nine and will continue to do so as required.

“All participants have access to the show psychologist and welfare resources during filming, during broadcast and once the program has ended.

“Nine also provides an additional service for participants should they like or need further individual and confidential psychological support. This service gives participants access to clinicians to support those involved in the program in relation to their experiences.

“This service is available to all participants for as long as they need it, with no end date.”

Yahoo Lifestyle understands that SafeWork NSW has made recommendations on how to strengthen processes moving forward, including consent training and domestic violence education, which are being implemented.

Participants also undergo police checks.

SafeWork NSW is continuing to monitor compliance and the Commissioner will be meeting with the show’s executives soon.

It comes after the British version of MAFS was pulled from streaming in Australia and the UK after contestants claimed they had been raped or suffered sexual misconduct by their on-screen partners.

No allegations of this nature have been made against the Australian show.
