Enthusiasts of period dramas need look no further for their next fixation, with one acclaimed series currently available to stream for free on Channel 4 online. The Serpent Queen debuted in 2022, followed by a second series in 2024, and swiftly garnered critical acclaim, achieving a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The programme chronicles the life of Catherine de’ Medici, the notorious 16th-century French Queen, portrayed in the series by Samantha Morton and Liv Hill. The narrative opens with the 14-year-old Catherine entering into marriage with the French Valois court, where expectations weigh heavily upon her to deliver a substantial dowry and produce heirs. While the programme isn’t renowned for its historical accuracy, it has nonetheless cultivated a considerable following.
