Prince Louis has yet to make his Wimbledon debut, but according to mom Kate Middleton, he has big dreams for an important role at the event!

Princess Kate and Prince William’s youngest child, 8, didn’t join his family in the Royal Box for the men’s singles final at the annual tennis tournament on Sunday, July 12, despite being the same age that his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were when they made their own Wimbledon debuts.

George, who will turn 13 later this month, first attended the sporting event with his parents in 2022, just weeks ahead of his ninth birthday. Charlotte, now 11, made her Wimbledon debut the following year, in 2023, when she was also 8.

Both of the elder Wales children joined their parents once again this year to watch the men’s championship between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Germany’s Alexander Zverev. However, it seems that Louis once again stayed home.

Like their mother, both George and Charlotte play tennis; however, Louis may have plans to make it onto the Wimbledon court in a different role.

The Telegraph interviewed ball girl Jenna Fontanilla, 18, after she spoke with Kate the day prior, and she said the Princess of Wales told her that her youngest child has dreams of becoming a ball boy.

“She told me about how Louis was asking her about how to become a ball boy, and we were talking about how much hard work it is to be on court and how we work alongside the ball kids, and it’s just so lovely,” Fontanilla said.

It’s a dream that dates back to at least the 2023 tournament, when Kate revealed that Prince Louis was sad about missing out on the tennis championship.

At that event, a teen Wimbledon ball boy named Joel said that the princess shared that Louis “tries to practice the standing and staying serious like us,” PA News reported. “He tries to practice the stands and how we stand at the back of the court and next to the players.”

Prince George and Princess Charlotte joined their parents at last year’s gentlemen’s singles final, where they were gifted signed tennis balls from champion Jannik Sinner. Three balls were signed, hinting that one was going home for Prince Louis.

“Thank you so much, that’s really kind,” Princess Kate told the Italian tennis star.

Although Prince Louis has attended major royal events in recent years — including Trooping the Colour, Queen Elizabeth’s 2022 Platinum Jubilee festivities and King Charles’ 2023 coronation — Wimbledon has strict restrictions when it comes to children. Despite Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s appearances, children are typically not permitted in the exclusive 74-seat Royal Box.

In September 1999, The Guardian reported that Katharine, the late Duchess of Kent (who was married to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent) wanted to invite two young family friends to sit with her in the Royal Box at Wimbledon on different days. While the Duchess of Kent’s 10-year-old godson got the green light to join her, organizers said they could not accommodate the 12-year-old son of the Duchess’ bereaved friend.

According to the outlet, Katharine was “deeply hurt” and considered boycotting the Royal Box. John Curry, who then served as chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, offered an apology but stuck to policy, explaining that only children of the royal family were allowed to sit there.

“As happens every year with all our royal guests, I reconfirmed our guidelines concerning the invitation of additional guests and the subject of children. No royal has been limited to one guest in the past or will be in the future,” Curry said in a statement. “Because of demand for space in the royal box, we also ask that, apart from children of the royal family, children are not invited as they exclude other worthy people from attending, many of whom contribute to tennis.”
