Ralf Schumacher reckons Lewis Hamilton should call time on his Formula 1 career when the 2026 season wraps up.

The former Williams driver doesn’t believe the seven-time world champion can get the better of teammate Charles Leclerc across an entire campaign, despite Hamilton showing improved form this year.

“Hamilton is in a better position again this year. But over the course of the season, he won’t stand a chance against Leclerc,” Schumacher said on the Sky Germany podcast Backstage Boxengasse.

It’s a bold claim about a driver who has won more titles than almost anyone in the sport’s history.

Schumacher didn’t stop there, though. He’s also calling for Fernando Alonso to hang up his helmet.

The German pundit believes both legends have had their time in the spotlight and should now step aside for the next generation.

“Hamilton and Alonso have had a wonderful time in Formula 1. But now it’s time for both of them to vacate their cockpits at the end of the year and give young people a chance,” he explained.

Between them, Hamilton and Alonso have claimed nine world championships, but both are now in their forties and facing struggles with their current teams.

Alonso’s Aston Martin outfit has endured a particularly rough 2026, with their cars proving difficult to handle for much of the season.

 | PASchumacher has a clear idea of who should take Hamilton’s seat at Ferrari, too.

He’s backing Oliver Bearman, the young Haas driver who remains part of Ferrari’s driver academy and turned 21 just last week.

“Oliver Bearman deserves the chance to sit in a Ferrari,” Schumacher declared.

But the German went even further, suggesting Bearman could prove more than a match for Leclerc.

“I also believe that, if he gets the chance, he’ll even pose a challenge to Charles Leclerc. I’m pretty sure of that. So I’d say he’s actually better.”

It’s quite the endorsement for the British youngster.

Hamilton’s situation at Ferrari hasn’t been straightforward, though.

The Scuderia have struggled for pace and consistency this season, with the British star still chasing his first Grand Prix victory since joining the team.

When critics have previously suggested he should retire, Hamilton has pushed back firmly, pointing out that none of them have achieved what he has in the sport.

He’s also spoken about still loving racing and believing in future success.

And here’s the thing – Hamilton reportedly has a contract in place for 2027 should he wish to carry on, so the decision ultimately rests with him.
