A woman was killed, and a man was wounded when they were shot Wednesday afternoon while in a car with a baby in the back seat in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, just steps from St. Sabina Parish.
Police said that, around 1:25 p.m., a 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were in a white car in the 7900 block of South May Street when they were both shot. The car then crashed into a GMC van, police said.
Video shared on social media shows at least three people run up to the victims’ car and fire at least two dozen shots. After running away, the shooters got into a red Alfa Romeo and fired several more shots into the car before fleeing the scene.

The witness who recorded the video said they are heartbroken and distraught, saying they were on their way from work when they saw the shooting. They said they saw the baby holding a lollipop in the backseat of the car, crying, after the shooting.
“Thank god that baby is so young, they probably won’t remember this day, but that baby is going to know that their mother was killed today. That baby could have been killed,” said Father Michael Pfleger.
The woman was shot multiple times throughout her body and was taken to OSF Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition, police said. Police confirmed the woman later died, but her name has not been released.
The man was shot in the buttocks and arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
The child was not injured.
The driver of the van refused medical attention.
“They all had long guns. It’s just crazy,” Father Pfleger said. “Somebody needs to be held accountable and if anybody knows who did that I think we got some good shots off the cameras on the buildings over there. I just want them caught.”
St. Sabina Church, where Pfleger has led anti-violence activism in the community for many years, is located at 1210 W. 78th Pl., a little over a block away from the crime scene.
No one was in custody in the shooting on Wednesday afternoon. Area 2 detectives were investigating.
