Extraordinary moment alleged car thieves return baby in Garbutt, Townsville before dramatic arrests
A mother’s relief, a bizarre roadside exchange and a dramatic overnight manhunt are all captured in newly released vision.
Ten people, including eight teenagers, have been charged after police recovered seven allegedly stolen vehicles during a major overnight operation, including the Isuzu involved in a terrifying incident in which a baby was taken inside a stolen car.
Police say further charges are expected as investigators continue examining the vehicle and reviewing evidence linked to Monday afternoon’s incident in Garbutt, Townsville, which sparked widespread concern across the north Queensland city.
The breakthrough came less than eight hours after a mother watched helplessly as her vehicle was driven away with the baby still inside.
Sarah, whose surname has been withheld, told 7NEWS she had been cleaning her Isuzu MU-X in the driveway of her Sunderland St home about 1.45pm on Monday while her baby slept in a car seat.
Moments later, someone allegedly jumped into the vehicle and drove away.

Sarah ran after the car screaming for the offenders to stop.
“My soul left my body,” she told 7NEWS.
“It was the most terrifying thing that has probably ever happened in my life, that I’ll probably ever experience.”
CCTV obtained by 7NEWS shows the alleged offenders pulling over in the stolen Isuzu MU-X before placing the baby, still strapped into her car seat, on the kerb.
Sarah is then seen running towards the vehicle and confronting the alleged offenders. Security vision shows her standing between two allegedly stolen cars, talking to the drivers.
“I asked them, I said, ‘why are you doing this? This is my family car. We work hard for this and I need this’,” she said.
The group allegedly returned her phone before driving away. Sarah then rushed to her baby as neighbours emerged to help.
The distraught mother could be heard crying with relief after discovering her child was unharmed.

Townsville District Superintendent Damian Crosby described the incident as “every parent’s nightmare”.
“The impact on the mother would have been a traumatic experience for anyone,” he said on Tuesday.
“We’re providing all support that we can possibly provide.”
Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics assessed the baby as a precaution.
With the assistance of PolAir, the Isuzu was located at a car park on Charters Towers Road about 9.45pm on Monday alongside a white Ford Ranger that had allegedly been stolen from a Railway Estate address the previous day.
Police said the Ford was engulfed in flames when officers arrived, but the fire was quickly extinguished.
Investigators allege a number of stolen vehicles were then tracked driving around Townsville, prompting a coordinated police operation involving tyre spikes.
Police recovered seven allegedly stolen vehicles during the operation, five of which were disabled using tyre deflation devices before officers moved in and made arrests.
PolAir vision shows alleged offenders scrambling through suburban backyards under the cover of darkness, climbing fences and darting between homes as officers closed in.
Body-worn camera footage captured the dramatic moments suspects are confronted by police before being taken into custody. Ten were taken into custody, eight of whom were juveniles, and a total of 19 charges have been laid thus far.
Among those charged are a 14-year-old Kirwan girl, a 15-year-old Kelso girl, a 16-year-old Wulguru boy, a 16-year-old Kirwan boy, a 16-year-old Railway Estate boy, two 17-year-old boys from Oonoonba and Palm Island, a 17-year-old girl, a 21-year-old Rasmussen woman and an 18-year-old Deeragun man.
Crosby confirmed all of those arrested were already known to police.

Nine of the 10 accused had their bail opposed by police and remained in custody on Tuesday. The only person granted bail was the 14-year-old Kirwan girl.
Crosby said a relatively small cohort of repeat offenders was responsible for a significant amount of property crime across the district.
“There is a cohort of offenders who are responsible for the vast majority of the harm being caused to the community,” he said.
“Last night, 10 of those offenders were taken into custody, but we’re not being complacent.
While the baby escaped unharmed, police say the investigation remains active as forensic examinations continue and detectives work to determine whether others were involved.
“There will be further charges pending, there’s no doubt,” Superintendent Crosby said.
“We know every time there’s a victim in the community, there’s one victim too many.”
Anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage or information is urged to contact police.
