With the Outlander finale just one week away, devoted fans may already be searching for something to fill the void — and one series hailed as “even better” than the beloved fantasy romance could be the perfect antidote, reports the Daily Record.

Viewers have been recommending a Netflix drama for those seeking a gripping historical series with perhaps slightly less dark content than Outlander.

Countless fans have urged others to give the show a chance, with many drawing comparisons to the iconic fantasy epic Game of Thrones.

The critically acclaimed drama boasts a star-studded cast, an impressive 91 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a remarkable 95 percent rating on the Popcornmeter.

The series in question is The Last Kingdom, with one Reddit user posting: “If you think you might like a period piece (middle ages England) with mature themes, great characters, and minimal SA… Try out The Last Kingdom.”

Another commented: “Second this, it’s a great insight into that era in history, and also a really accessible watch.”

A third noted: “No I loved the last kingdom if that was what you were wondering. I watch it over and over again.”

While a fourth added: “Yeah lets get some love for The last Kingdom! Awesome performance of king Alfred [sic].” Another responded: “King Alfred was absolutely a masterpiece!”

The Last Kingdom is based on the much-loved Saxon Stories novel series penned by Sharpe author Bernard Cornwell.

The show centres on Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon), the son of a nobleman who is brought up by the Danes.

He is subsequently recruited by King Alfred the Great (David Dawson) to assist in uniting the various kingdoms of England into a single nation.

Throughout this journey, Uhtred finds himself torn between conflicting loyalties while striving to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg.

he Last Kingdom spanned five series before concluding with the feature film Seven Kings Must Die in 2023.

The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now and is available to watch on Apple TV+ for a fee
