Under the leaden skies of Wednesday, the somber tolling of funeral bells echoed through the streets of Milan, Bologna, and Rome. One week after the fateful New Year’s Eve inferno at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland, Italy and the rest of Europe fulfilled their most painful duty: bringing the children home to their final rest.
White Coffins and Unfinished Dreams

At the cathedrals in Milan, the coffins of Achille Barosi and Chiara Costanzo, both just 16 years old, were submerged in a sea of white flowers and stifled sobs.
Achille Barosi: A gifted young painter who had actually reached safety but made the fatal decision to dash back into the “hellscape” to retrieve a forgotten phone and jacket. It was a journey from which he would never return.
Chiara Costanzo: Described by her father as “the most extraordinary person to ever walk the earth,” Chiara ended up at Le Constellation by mere chance, only to see her youthful dreams extinguished forever in the Alpine smoke.
Simultaneously, in Rome and Bologna, thousands gathered to weep for Riccardo Minghetti and Giovanni Tamburi. Riccardo failed to escape alongside his sister, leaving behind an indelible trauma for his surviving family.
Heartbreaking Numbers Born of Carelessness
The fire at the Le Constellation bar was more than an accident; it was a massacre caused by negligence.
The Cause: Sparklers from celebratory champagne bottles ignited soundproofing material on the ceiling, triggering a “flashover”—an instantaneous total fire engulfment—within seconds.
The Casualties: 40 lives from seven different nations were lost. Among them, 26 victims were aged between 14 and 18.
The Identity Crisis: The inferno was so intense that many bodies were burnt beyond recognition, forcing forensic experts to rely on DNA analysis to give the victims back their names.
Talents Frozen at the Prime of Youth
The tragedy claimed the brightest stars of a new generation:
Emanuele Galeppini (17): A rising star in the golfing world who was rapidly climbing the global amateur rankings.
Sofia Prosperi (15): A brilliant international school student whom friends could only identify via chaotic TikTok videos filmed moments before the flames took hold.
Riccardo Minghetti: A passionate tennis player and skier remembered by teachers for his warmth and infectious smile.
Justice Amidst the Embers
As Italy observed a national minute of silence, the investigation into the bar’s owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, intensified. Allegations of locked emergency exits and fire extinguishers kept under lock and key have sparked a wave of international fury.
Today, the smiles of Achille, Chiara, and Riccardo exist only in framed photographs. Their shattered dreams remain the most brutal warning of the cost of negligence amidst the glitz of high-society celebrations.
