A MUM who died in an explosion when her gangster ex let off a “grenade” in her home has been hailed a hero after it emerged she saved her child from the blast.

Jo Shaw, 35, died in a “suspicious” explosion which rocked a quiet suburban street in Bristol on Sunday.

Her ex – Ryan Kelly, 41 – who was previously jailed for his role in a “Breaking Bad” drug gang, “forced entry” into the property before an “explosive device” was set off deliberately inside the home, cops said.

Armed officers were already on their way to the property following reports of a “domestic-related incident” when the explosion went off at 6.30am.

It is thought Jo’s son and two other family members were hospitalised for minor injuries after the blast – they have all since been discharged.

A neighbour has now told how heroic Jo instructed her young child to go outside and play on a trampoline before the deadly detonation went off.

The youngster is understood to have been rescued from the explosion moments before it sent shockwaves through Sterncourt Road.

Stuart Blanchard, who lives a few doors down, told The Mirror: “I spoke to the guy who called 999 and he said the child was out on the trampoline. It will haunt [them].

“She probably told [the child] to go out there to get out of the way of them arguing. I was woken to her [Joanne] shouting ‘go away, go away’ and then there was this loud boom that shook my door and windows.

“The partner’s [Kelly’s] gone there in a mental state. It wasn’t Jo’s house, it was her parent’s, she just lived there. She had split up with him and I think she moved there to escape from him.”

Emergency services including the British Army‘s ordnance disposal teams were scrambled to the scene after the explosion, which went off 13 minutes after the initial 999 call, was reported.

Avon and Somerset Police have since said that it is treating the “deliberate” explosion as “suspicious”.

The force said Jo and Kelly had a history of domestic incidents and has referred itself to the police watchdog.

Cops said they are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident, although the investigation was at an early stage.

Officers are combing over another home in Speedwell, Bristol, linked to Kelly, as their investigation continues.

First responders were seen giving Jo CPR but when explosive ordnance disposal teams arrived they were forced to leave the scene while specialists swept the area.

Jo’s tragic death is being treated as a homicide, Bristol cops said.

Her family have been informed of the tragedy and are being supported by specialist officers.

Offering a tribute to Jo, a neighbour said: “Joey was a wonderful woman who would always do anything for you.

“Our community is absolutely devastated by this horrific incident. We are all thinking of her. It is so incredibly sad.“

Speaking yesterday Superintendent Matt Ebbs said: “We know people will be shocked and upset to learn of the horrendous events that happened on Sunday morning.

“Jo’s death has been officially recorded as a homicide based on the information known to us at this time. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

“We know everyone’s thoughts and sympathies will be with her devastated family.

“Specially-trained officers are providing them with updates and support.

“We recognise there is significant interest in what happened, but at the centre of it there are many people grieving and we would please ask everyone respects that and gives them the privacy they want.”

Kelly was previously jailed for five years after he supplied cocaine as part of a “Breaking Bad” drugs gang.

The 41-year-old was sentenced to five years in 2015 after admitting conspiracy to supply the Class A drug alongside seven other men.

George Rogers, 78, ran the operation from a prison cell despite battling lung cancer.

He planned to set up a self-taught chemist with a lab and produce crystal meth, but police exposed the plot before the highly-addictive drug could be circulated.

Neighbours said Jo moved to the terraced house in Frenchay, Bristol, to escape the gangster.

Friends paid tribute to Jo, who was said to work at a tanning salon.

One called her “the most amazing woman I’ve ever known”.

The pal, who asked not to be named, added: “Last week she sounded so happy that she was finally safe and free from her ex.”

Following the fatal blast Carpenter Wayne Smith, 58, told The Sun: “He’s turned up at her house with a grenade and detonated it on the doorstep and killed the pair of them.”

Mr Smith and others living in the square felt their homes shake when the blast hit.

Fire engines raced to the scene and cops sealed off the area and evacuated residents.

Mr Smith added: “At first, when I heard the boom, I thought it was a gas explosion or even a huge car crash. I could feel the whole house shake.”
