Atonement star Romola Garai and Mamma Mia!‘s Dominic Cooper are the protagonists of ITV’s upcoming drama Adultery, centred on a whirlwind affair that threatens the stability of two families.

Anticipated by an intriguing trailer, the new series from Harlan Coben’s longtime collaborator Danny Brocklehurst — who has worked on hit shows such as Fool Me OnceLazarusThe StrangerRun Away and more — has been hailed as “a provocative love story of passion, parenthood and peril”.

When Beth Brookes (Garai) and Tom Kirkman (Cooper) have a road accident, their lives collide in unexpected ways.

The attraction between them is unmistakable, though they strive to act as loyal partners to Neil (Matthew McNulty) and Hannah (Shelley Conn) and as responsible partners to their teenage children. Tom’s 15-year-old daughter Jess (Leila Khan) and Beth’s son Ollie (Johnny Sanpher) are in a relationship, with the throes of first love having become all-consuming.

As the series investigates issues about class, grief and the effect of social media, Tom and Beth struggle with their undeniable desire, embarking on an affair that risks upending both of their families’ lives.

“There’s a psychological equation. Attraction plus an obstacle equals excitement,” Beth says in the trailer for the series premiering this autumn.

“But what happens if the attraction is too strong? What then?” she continues as a montage reveals the thrills of meeting in secret.

The ups of their fling are followed by dramatic lows when Tom’s daughter Jess finds out that her dad is sleeping with her boyfriend’s mum through a video, with the trailer hinting at their affair being not-so-secret after all.

The series is produced by Poison Pen Studios, part of ITV Studios.

Adultery airs on ITV and STV later this autumn and will be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player.
