‘Masterpiece’ period drama based on true story ‘one of the best’ shows on Netflix

Netflix fans shouldn’t miss out on this “phenomenal” period drama set to return for another season later this year.

The Crown is undeniably a global hit when it comes to historical shows but there’s another period drama based on real life on Netflix that fans shouldn’t miss out on.

Set in mid 19th Century Austria, The Empress is a German-language drama that follows the turbulent life of rebellious Bavarian princess Elisabeth “Sisi” von Wittelsbach.

At just age 16, Sisi fell head over heels with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and following their marriage, she finds herself landed in the complex world of court politics.

With both seasons already available to stream on Netflix, fans haven’t been able to stop singing its praises, with many comparing it to The Crown.

“What an absolutely stunning series. Everything about The Empress was top notch”, one said.

The first two seasons are currently able to stream with a third and final season of The Empress now officially on its way.

An official release date hasn’t yet been set but it’s believed that The Empress season three will be scheduled to premiere late in 2026.
