The Duchess of Sussex’s introduction was part of her interview with journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge
Meghan Markle “may have broken royal protocol” with her bizarre ceremonial introduction of asking friends to announce her to guests when she enters a room, according to experts.
The Duchess of Sussex was welcomed by her full title when she sat down with Kaitlyn Greenidge to promote her upcoming Netflix Christmas special.
The journalist from Harper’s Bazaar revealed the unique moment in New York, detailing the introduction despite there only being one other person in the room with them.
Ms Greenidge said: “We’re in a grand brownstone on the Upper East Side that belongs to one of Meghan’s friends.

“When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.”
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the introduction may have broken royal protocol.
“I have often felt that Meghan took to heart Oscar Wilde’s dictum, ‘To love oneself is the beginning of a lifetime’s romance’,” Mr Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail.
He continued: “It speaks volumes, in an interview calculated not to offend, about the importance Meghan attaches to her royal status… [It] would make a wonderful skit in the South Park series.”

Mr Fitzwilliams explained it should have been the journalist announced to Meghan, rather than the other around, “so this breaks protocol”.
The royal commentator added: “It makes her look silly. There was that painful scene when she did a mock curtsey, imitating what happened when she met Queen Elizabeth II for the first time in the Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan. She calls it ‘medieval’.
“She had also appeared to mock curtsey in the infamous Oprah interview.”
Guidance from Buckingham Palace suggests visitors are usually announced, unlike Royal Family members.

The official Royal Family website states when audiences are held with a high commissioner or ambassador and their spouse in the presence of the monarch, the Marshall of the Diplomatic Corps announces their names upon entry into the state or semi-state room.
Debrett’s, a British publisher and authority on etiquette, said introductions to the royals are known as “presentations” and it is only necessary to state the name of the person to be presented.
Aside from the bizarre announcement for Meghan during her meeting with Ms Greenidge, another memorable moment occurred when the pair linked up again at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
A waiter brought Meghan a cappuccino adorned with what the journalist described as a “photorealistic image” of the duchess, rendered in milk foam and depicting her during a South African royal engagement.

Ms Greenidge noted their “prime” table placement ensured visibility to fellow patrons, interpreting this arrangement as a “calculated choice” for the interview setting.
These theatrical elements punctuated their discussions about Meghan’s upcoming programming ventures.
The interview comes as the duchess prepares for the launch of her festive television series next month.
Netflix’s “With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration” is scheduled for release on December 3.
