A truck carrying a crane has caught fire, causing traffic chaos on a major Queensland highway.

The truck was travelling on the Cunningham Hwy on Blackstone in Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane, when it caught fire about 8.40am on Thursday.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as the inferno grew, fully engulfing the truck.

Multiple fire crews tackled the blaze, bringing it under control about 10.30am, with firefighters still dampening down the destroyed vehicle.

Paramedics assessed two patients, who are believed to be uninjured.

“Both west bound lanes are currently closed with traffic being diverted at Redbank Plains Rd,” police said.

“Eastbound lanes adjacent to the incident have been reduced down to one lane.

“Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and avoid the area.”

Stand-still traffic along the highway was seen in to be banked up for several kilometers.

Queensland Traffic said major delays were expected throughout the day.
