A MAN has been charged with murder after a woman’s body was pulled from the water at an exclusive private member’s club.

Thames Valley Police were scrambled to Phyllis Court Drive in Henley-on-Thames on Friday after receiving reports that a woman had died.

A body was sadly recovered from the water, prompting detectives to launch a murder investigation.

Cops, forensics officers and police divers were seen scouring the river for evidence in the wake of the tragedy.

Following the grim discovery Nelio Gouveia, 44, was arrested in connection with the woman’s death.

He remained in police custody as the murder probe continued and has since been charged with one count of murder, cops said.

Gouveia has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Thames Valley Police said: “We have liaised with the Crown Prosecution Service, and this evening they have authorised a charge in relation to this incident.

“Nelio Gouveia, aged 44 of Phyllis Court Drive, Henley-on-Thames has been charged with one count of murder.

“He has been remanded in custody and will appear at High Wycombe Magistrates court on Monday.”

A post-mortem examination has revealed the woman’s cause of death was drowning.

Cops said they are not in a position to identify the victim at this stage.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

There is an increased police presence in the area and the club has closed until further notice, according to its website.

Boats and police divers dressed in bright orange joined the investigation and were pictured as they thoroughly searched the river.

Detective Inspector Rob Underhill previously said: “We are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

“I want to reassure the community that there is no risk to the wider public.

“Members of the public are likely to see an increased police presence while we continue to investigate, and we would advise anyone with any concerns to please speak to one of our uniformed officers.”
