Netflix is bringing back “one of the best shows” for another season and fans cannot wait.

An “absolutely amazing show” that some fans have preferred other hits including Virgin River, is coming back to Netflix.

Over a year has elapsed since Sweet Magnolias fans received an update from Serenity, with many keen to discover what unfolds after that series four cliffhanger.

Madeline Townsend (portrayed by JoAnna Garcia Swisher) disclosed that she accepted a publishing job in New York, casting doubt over her future in Serenity.

Today, Wednesday, January 7, Netflix unveiled its ‘What’s Next? 2026’ slate, hinting at release dates for some of its biggest shows including Virgin River and Beef season two.

Among the revelations is the precise return date for Sweet Magnolias season five, although fans will have to bide their time a bit longer.

Sweet Magnolias season five will debut on Thursday, June 11, on Netflix, meaning there’s still a five-month wait before its comeback.

By the time the drama returns, more than a year will have passed since fans last indulged in the Sherryl Woods-adapted drama.

In the meantime, Netflix has offered fans a sneak peek of what lies ahead with a first-look image from season five.

The photo features Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), Maddie and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) sharing a hug and smiling at something off-camera.

It’s evident that despite Maddie spending more time in New York, she’s still finding time for her best friends.

As they wait for the drama’s return, fans have been likening Sweet Magnolias to the hit romantic drama Virgin River which is returning for season seven later this year.

When asked which they preferred on Facebook, someone posted: “Definitely Sweet Magnolias.. I need more seasons ASAP. I watch Virgin river when im bored lol it’s too dry & Mel stresses me out.”

Another on Reddit agreed: “Personally I prefer Sweet Magnolias but that’s not saying it’s objectively better than VR – it’s mostly because I’m a sucker for a girlfriend group dynamic.”

While a third added: “I actually felt like the drama in Sweet Magnolias were less self inflicted and made more sense, so I’m more curious as to where they take those storylines.”

Fellow viewers on IMDb also couldn’t help but praise the show with some labelling it as “perfect, as another echoed: “This is one of the best shows to come out on Netflix in a long time!”

Discussing the shift in setting for season five, showrunner and executive producer Sheryl J Anderson expressed: “We are thrilled to let the Magnolias take Manhattan.

“Not only is this adventure huge fun, it’s also an opportunity to explore the facets of their relationships in a new context.

“While it’s crucial to have true friends in day-to-day life, it’s priceless to have them supporting you when you leap out of your comfort zone.”
