Star Wars blew the movie world apart when it was first released in 1977(Image: Corbis via Getty Images)
Nearly five decades ago, cinema history was transformed when the original Star Wars film hit screens. The opening chapter of what would evolve into a worldwide sensation launched in 1977, with audiences instantly captivated by Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and their adventures in a galaxy far, far away.
Now, one of the earliest glimpses cinema-goers received of the film has emerged once more – and it appears remarkably different from the finished product. The teaser trailer, reportedly shown before screenings of the 1976 remake of King Kong, features a foreboding voice-over and notably omits one of the saga’s most crucial components – John Williams’ legendary score.
It was shared on X, previously known as Twitter, by actor and musician Michael Warburton. Michael commented: “This STAR WARS teaser trailer was screened before ‘King Kong’ in December of 1976. The special effects weren’t finished, the music is NOT John Williams, and all in all it gives off a very different, much darker vibe. Interesting.”
The footage begins with a view of space, featuring an unidentifiable object in the distance, while a thunderous voice declares: “Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now. 20th Century Fox and George Lucas, the man who brought you American Graffiti, now bring you an adventure unlike anything on your planet: Star Wars.”
The object gradually draws nearer, ultimately revealed as the film’s title, while the trailer showcases fleeting glimpses from the picture, featuring characters including the main trio, alongside the villainous Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and droids C-3PO and R2-D2. It’s set to a suspenseful, minimalist soundtrack – vastly different from the rousing orchestral score John Williams would create for the film, reports the Express.

The narration goes on: “The story of a boy, a girl, and a universe. It’s a big, sprawling space saga of rebellion and romance. It’s a spectacle, light years ahead of its time. It’s an epic of heroes and villains and aliens from a thousand worlds. Star Wars: A billion years in the making, and it’s coming to your galaxy this summer.”
The footage concludes with the film’s title exploding into pieces, reminiscent of the Death Star at the movie’s finale, followed by the text: “Coming this summer from 20th Century Fox.”
On the whole, it suggests a far darker, more ominous film than the rousing action-adventure cinema audiences would ultimately witness in 1977. Notably, the film is simply called Star Wars. It wasn’t until its 1981 re-release that it would acquire the complete title of Episode IV: A New Hope.
Fans were left astonished by the footage, with numerous viewers remarking how different it feels to the completed movie. One, DethNade, commented: “Glad they put John Williams music in it. And it feels like I’m watching The Twilight Zone or something lol.”
Liam posted: “Oh wow. It’s got that ‘gritty seventies sci-fi’ feel to it.”
And Plant And Tractor Trader remarked: “The music plays such a part in the film being good. It’s kind of weird to watch that without the music.”
Danny Ashkenasi put forward a theory about what the tense soundtrack might be, suggesting: “The background music appears to be the beginning of ‘Winter’ from Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons on a loop.”
Meanwhile, Das_Principal commented: “I was 15 when it came out. I remember watching the trailers and thinking I’ve never seen anything like this.”
